An inexplicably powerful film. It builds in odd order, fluctuates its tone from one scene to another, has the vague scent of amateur pretention, and for the longest time has very little in terms of traditional narrative momentum....
Yet, through the miraculous (and I wouldn't throw that word around loosely, these are two of the greatest performance in any film I have ever seen) performances of Crudup and Connelly -- among the most brilliant talents of their generation -- and its uncompromising vision of seething woe and bitter memories, it is a masterwork. A great, modernist companion to Wuthering Heights...
