Review of Waking Sleeping Beauty (2009) by Shane D — 19 Feb 2012
A Disney fan at heart, its incredibly hard to resist the magic offered in even the worst that the company has had to offer over the years. I came to this film after watching a compilation of moments from Disney's history of animation and was intrigued.
It's worth noting, that I don't have a lot of love for the animated films dealt with during this era (although I do respect them as being great - I just never connected with them at the time nor since).
The film is at times wonderfully interesting and at other times, seemed like just a chance for a bunch of old men to take pot shots at each other. It was great to see some of the behind the scenes on how some of the films got made, or almost didn't get made but when it dealt with the power struggles within the company, that's when it lost me.
Perhaps that was the point of the film, but I'd much rather see a retrospective of the artistic evolution at Disney, rather than hear about the machinations and battling ego's of its executives.
Either way, it was an entertaining watch.
