Review of Waking Life (2001) by Pierluigi F — 30 Aug 2010
When I started to watch it (late at night) I looked at how long it would have last, since it's not a LIGHT movie at all. You got to stay focused if you want to grasp the deep meaning of some of the talks between characters.. If you're not english - like me - you would appreciate at least the english subtitles. But the story slides on so smoothly from a state to another, from theories to chit-chat, from philosophies to religions, that I reached the end of the movie before I could realize it and didn't have to interrupt it and continue to watch it the very next day.
If you watch it thinking at the new animation techniques we got now it looks awfully old - but still greatly artistically valid.
I loved everything said in this movie and it's really an oniric carousel into our fears and values, ideas and beliefs, where you can find your perfect match for your utopic answer to the old "Why are we here?" question OR just consider it wasted time with quite interesting discussions on that theme...
Not an easy movie. Lots of talk, some annoying fluctuating animations every now and then, If you like experimental movies and something to talk.
About with friends.. this could be perfect.
Not a piece of art but absolutely Worth watching.
