Review of Waking Life (2001) by Mike H — 16 Oct 2011
The good and bad are sort of stapled to each other in Waking Life: The movie is a series of the protagonist's dreams, which are more of a series of college-level existential philosophical discussions than anything that would resemble a dream, with one or two exceptions, and a new area of 2-D animation is explored in what is basically rotoscoped video with a digital watercolor effect applied, which is a little dizzying in the hand-held bits.
This is why the good and bad go hand-in-hand: where Waking Life breaks new ground, it does so while keeping the audience at arm's length.
