Review of Wake Wood (2011) by Ricardo A — 12 Oct 2012
Wake Wood is one of Hammer films best Horror films in they're Hammer Revival films since The Woman In Black and it is way better than they're last film which is The Resident starring Hilary Swank, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Christopher Lee.
I seriously enjoyed watching this Irish and British Horror film and it has a lot of style compared to how The Resident was like. This movie stays true to being scary and creepy at the same time and it still has that old school Horror feel of the previous Hammer films which I seriously enjoyed in the movie so far.
The plot of this film is simple. The movie is about a young couple who is grieving for the death of they're daughter after they're daughter gets mauled by a vicious dog. The couple moves and stays in the rural town of Wake Wood where they also seek help in resurrecting they're daughter.
And after they're daughter came back to life thanks to Arthur's help strange things start to happen in Wake Wood when mysterious deaths starts occurring the couple soon learn that they're daughter also changed into an evil person after she was resurrected and the couple also now knows the truth when the rules break about resurrecting they're loved ones.
This Irish and British Horror movie is really well made and it has some nerve and style to impress those people who love Hammer's old Horror films. I seriously enjoy this film by Hammer films and they seriously managed to return in the Horror genre after several years that they made a lot of Horror films in the 50's, 60's and 70's.
I was so proud with this film thanks to an impressive script and a stylish directing from David Keating. This movie seriously impressed me a lot and I was so proud with this film. This movie has a lot of impressive things.
The great things about Wake Wood is that the film's setting is great. The rural Wake Wood town is really eerie and the town itself also creates a gothic feel and it makes the movie look creepy at the same time which is great for a Horror movie so far.
Since the settings create a gothic feel I also enjoyed the film's concept and the concept of Wake Wood is really scary and creepy at the same time plus the concept of Wake Wood is really similar to Stephen King's Pet Semetary.
But unlike Pet Semetary which focuses on gore and suspense this one stays true to itself as a suspense movie and follows the old school formulas of the previous Hammer films in the 50's, 60's and 70's as well Pet Semetary follows the Stephen King style but this movie is way more different than Pet Semetary.
While the concept is impressive I also enjoy Wake Wood's soundtrack. The soundtrack of the movie is eerie and dark as well and the music of Wake Wood also creates a gothic feel which fits well for the eerie settings of Wake Wood and the music also elevates the suspense and brooding atmosphere and the soundtrack really managed to make the film look good a lot so far.
I think the best scene where the soundtrack is well used is the scene where Patrick is going after Alice when Alice is about to leave Wake Wood and Alice started having the same bite marks from the dog when she was killed that song is used really well in the movie and I did like that scene because that scene is really eerie thanks to a powerful soundtrack it makes the movie look good so far.
I also enjoyed the film's gore effects and all of the gore effects are brutal and disturbing in the film and I did like the gore in this movie a lot and it makes the movie look scary as well so far.
While the movie's CGI is average the other great thing about Wake Wood is it's performances from the casts. The casts of this movie includes Harry Potter's Timothy Spall, Aidan Gillen and Eva Birthistle and they're performances are great in the movie so far and they handled they're performances really well so far.
Irish Director David Keating did a great job with his work with this movie so far and I'm hoping to see more of his future works in the future as well and hope that he makes more good Horror films.
Overall Wake Wood gets a 10/10 because this movie has all of the suspense, tension, gore and incredible settings with a powerful soundtrack and incredible performances from the casts as well and it has the feel of the old Hammer Horror films as well so far.
This is Hammer's best film since The Woman In Black and I can't wait to see more of Hammer's future works in the future.
