Review of Wake of Death (2004) by Sean S — 20 Nov 2007
Jean Claude Van Damme fans are in for quite a treat. This is Van Damme's best performance, no seriously, one can see that he really made a big effort towards his acting in this film, and in most ways, the guy really pulled it off. Plot goes: wife get's killed, he goes out for revenge! But it's not so linear as it sounds. It actually turns into a nice semi-thriller with 3 or 4 action set pieces. Cheesy dialogue were minimal, the action scenes all looked great and I was never really bored with the film. It did have it's downsides here and there, the ending was too quick, plotholes here and there, but not nearly as many as I thought there were gonna be. I've given up on Van Damme since Knock-Off, but I can honestly say if your a JCVD fan, your gonna love this movie, if your neutral on the guy, I'll still recommend this film as a above average action/thriller.
Oh yes, did I mention the entire film was shot in Cape Town. Yes, there's a action set piece in one of the malls that involve 2 scrambler bikes, pretty cool, and the people who stay there should recognise a lot more. Blink and you'll miss Le-anne Liebenberg and be sure to check out the end credits...lots of SA people who worked on this film.
