Review of Wake of Death (2004) by Marc-André M — 09 Mar 2008
Along with In Hell and the more recent Until Death, this one is undeniably one of Van Damme's best post-2000 movie, and one of Van Damme's best movies period in my book.Cold, brutal, and gladly empty of most cheesy elements of previous Van Damme movies, this one marks a different turn for Van Damme in terms of acting and in terms of tone.
Not only is Van Damme's acting actually quite good in this, but there's barely any humour in the movie, or any Van Damme traditional fun-but-cheesy trademarks (like the split, the traditional but shot or the one-liners).
As much as I like a lot of Van Damme's previous movies, it's actually really interesting to see that he's trying something different, and that it is working.
