Review of Wake in Fright (1971) by David R — 18 Jul 2009
Once thought lost forever, the 1971 film 'Wake In Fright' (known as 'Outback' overseas) is a startling classic of modern Australian cinema.
'Wake In Fright' works on so many levels - and some of them all at once. While it can be viewed as a terrifying glimpse into Australia's recent past, it can also make you consider how little some things may have changed - and while some aspects of Australian life back then have quaint charm, other aspects look downright awful.
As well, 'Wake In Fright' is a interesting display of how much films have changed (in this day and age, the infamous kangaroo-hunting sequence wouldn't appear outside of a graphic documentary) and also a forebear of later Australian cinema (you can see its influence in the likes of 'Wolf Creek' and even the 'Mad Max' films).
'Wake In Fright' is an experience indeed.
