Review of Wake in Fright (1971) by Keith M — 20 Oct 2012
I suppose this is a good specimen of the Australian new wave and if you are a professional critic then you are obliged to give this 5 stars just for that reason. But awe Inspiring? Come on. I thought the movie was tedious without much of a story beyond what is provided in the synopsis.
The characters and mise-en-scène were excellent, and after you stop hitting yourself over the head with a hammer it does feel relieving to have the whole thing come to an end, but I wasn't left with any other thought then getting on with my life.
Spoiler alert: some kangaroos were most definitely harmed in the making of this movie... And see it on DVD so you can get some proper subtitles. I saw it on the sliver screen and perhaps if I understood more of the colorful Aussie dialogue then I would have gotten more out of the movie.
... but I doubt it.
