Review of Waitress (2007) by Rhoda M — 06 Feb 2009
Keri Russell is AMAZING in this movie. Probably 70% of the movie is her in close-up. Keri is sooo beautiful, but she allows herself to look tired, frumpy, worn, puffy as the character requires. She shows serious acting talent and completely carries the movie.
She gets excellent support from fellow waitresses Cheryl Hines and Adrienne Shelly, and mean insensitive husband Jeremy Sisto. I hadn't heard of Nathan Fillion, who plays the doctor who complicates Russell's life, but he did a nice job with what he was given to do.
The story is gritty and honest and, while somewhat formulaic, was, up until the unsurprising "surprise" ending, very true to the experiences of people I have known. The hopelessness of a low-income person trapped in a marriage to a controlling jabusive erk was heart-breakingly well-portrayed.
Her affair was less believable, and she took risks that no one being dominated so completely by her spouse would ever take. I thought it was a terrific movie and, while not perfect, it's a better movie experience than the vast majority of "big" films that are out there these days.
