Review of Waiting for "Superman" (2010) by K W — 31 Mar 2011
This is an excellent eye opening documentary on a crisis that's taking place within our country. Not too long ago America had the model success for public education for the rest of the world to try and emulate. Davis Guggenheim is a director that has arrived after giving us "An Inconvenient Truth" and the excellent rock documentary "It May Get Loud". He takes a deep look at our flawed educational system and mainly focuses on the middle school and high school levels as this is where most kids get lost in the system. As I was watching this documentary I couldn't help but look at my education as I bounced around from school to school prior to sticking with one high school. As I reflect back I realize that there were some huge differences in the quality of education I was receiving. I was lucky enough to be placed in an excellent high school that allowed me to catch up.
I was surprised at how informative and emotional this film was. It follows five young students who are trying to get a shot at a better education than the one they're stuck with. You'll learn that teachers unions and their tenor are largely at fault and you'll be shocked as this film starts us off in the classroom, but at the end of it you'll see a very big picture outside the classroom. The big picture is the big problem that not enough of us are talking about. The economy, National Security, discrimination, poverty, unemployment, healthcare, immigration and a host of other problems all rest on our education. This is a must see film for Americans that want a better future for our country. 10 out of 10 from me.
