Not the end all on the education problem, but a good starting point for those that don't know much about it. Definitely recommend The Lottery as well. It's sad that of all the problems in the US that education just can't seem to be a higher priority.
It's true that inner city kids could be helped by better schools, but the nation as a whole would be greatly elevated by improving the infrastructure and quality of the education system. If it doesn't make you mad at some point, you aren't paying attention.
