Review of Waiting for "Superman" (2010) by Que S — 25 Jun 2011
The most prevalent thing that this movie proves is the horrendous state of education in the country of the United States. As a Professional well experienced & versed in my field, the lottery system used is absolutely disgraceful in my opinion.
To submit low income parents & children to it is abominable. Talk about teaching a child to have no hope if they lose! Anyone who has never been a teacher in a public school system for at least 10 years time, really has no authority, or right for that matter, to comment on what should & should not be done with teachers.
The tenure system has its challenges, but the most important challenge of the tenure system was not even mentioned: when you are not a permanent contracted teacher, you are totally at the mercy of whoever is evaluating you: namely the principal.
If for some reason, the principal DOES NOT LIKE YOU, for whatever reason that has NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR ABILITY AS A TEACHER, you have no recourse, they do not have to re-hire you. It is a popularity contest based on your likeability factor, rather than if you are a talented or competent teacher, which is totally disgusting & unprofessional.
According to the statistics in the movie, the U.S. is 24th out of 30 countries for its ranking compared to other countries. IF the United States continues to not listen to other ways that have proven to work, for example, in the Country of Canada, then the U.
S. is going to continue to have very poor test scores. It's SIMPLE, not rocket science...The education system in the U.S. needs to get its' head out of the sand & REVISE the education system federally.
Otherwise, children ARE going to continue to be LEFT BEHIND.
