Review of Waiting for "Superman" (2010) by Andrew C — 29 Oct 2012
Just finished watching this. Some problems with it is that they ONLY talk about the inner city schools. They very briefly speak about good public schools. The whole idea was well put, but the problem I have is about the lottery.
Schools should not do that. It should be solely based on past performance not a lottery. That is unfair how the little latino girl was a girl that had brains and couldn't get in, but kids that won't be as productive as her didn't.
They should have used some more time talking about the public schools in areas not infested with poverty. The statistics that they use are brutal and it sucks that Americans are actually perceived by many other countries as idiots b/c we have such bad educational systems in poor and poverty stricken schools.
I live 45 minutes from Detroit and we have tons of great schools in the Oakland County area but then the DPS schools are just awful. Over 20 of the 40 worse schools in the entire state are in the Detroit district and I know that these kids are getting an awful education and even if they get a 3.
4 GPA at their HS they go to college and flunk out b/c a 3.4 GPA at a crap HS is equivalent to about a 2.4 GPA at a normal school. Parents in poverty stricken cities should try to find a motor home neighborhood closer to a good school district.
As a parent they should care more about their child, and I take a guess that they can probably find a job closer to a bad neighborhood b/c if they are under the poverty line in the first place then they can find a job somewhere else if it makes their kids going to a good school.
When I have kids I refuse to have my children attend a school that isn't up to any academic standards.
