Review of Waiting for "Superman" (2010) by Jason W — 05 Mar 2011
Davis Guggenheim brings us another truth that many will find inconvenient; that our education system runs not with the students interest in mind, but the educators. He takes a long hard look at what makes the system run while focusing our attention to five students in high risk schools.
These kids are not lazy or stupid, but because of the schools they attend, failure is ever present. Mr. Guggenheim looks at the unions and tenure. The process it takes and near impossibility to fire lackluster and unmotivated teachers is mind boggling.
He gives us hope with people like Mr. Canada in Harlem who know what it takes and are doing it. Or Ms. Rhee in D.C. who strives to cut through the tape and chains that hold the system in lethargic limbo.
The film is honest, heartbreaking and essential. Something needs to be done for the future generations that will take over someday. This teacher gives it an A.
