Review of Waiting for Guffman (1997) by Christopher C — 02 Mar 2009
This film, like "This is Spinal Tap," is possibly one of the only films that gets funnier and more potent every time you watch it...especially if you are familiar at all with the world of community theater (as I am).
The improvised dialogue is truly amazing and the songs are very clever. There's poignancy here, too: you end up rooting for these folks in the end, as quirky and dysfunctional as they are, which is a tribute to both the fine cast and Guest's subtlety and pathos as a filmmaker.
The only possible demerit I could give "Guffman" is for the fact that some amazing musical sequences ("Bulging River," "Nothing Ever Happens in Blaine") were cut from the movie for time.
In the end, I just couldn't bear to. The best of Guest's "mockumentaries." Five stars.
