Review of Wait Until Dark (1967) by Evan W — 14 Oct 2007
I wanted to like this, really I did. Audrey Hepburn? Score! Alan Arkin? Sure thing! Music by Henry Mancini? Sign me up! But why is this movie so dull? I understand it was based off of a stage play (so was "Rope" which was far mroe effective as a thriller) so the setting is limited almost entirely to Susy's (Hepburn) apartment.
That's fine with me. The problem is the plot. Arkin and company try to get back a doll laced with a stash of heroin that accidentally found its way into Susy's apartment. Susy is blind. Her husband is out of town.
Cue the ridiculously absurd and/or stupid antics used to get the doll. It is far too much to go into but you'll see what I mean if you watch this. In no way is this a bad movie. It is quite masterful with its presentation (especially the climactic confrontation).
It just cannot live up to the its potential. Hepburn's still cute, though.
