Review of Wait Until Dark (1967) by Blake P — 17 Aug 2011
"Wait Until Dark" is an excellent movie! Susy Hendrix (Hepburn) is a newly- blind woman who lives in Greenwich Village. Her life is great, until hoodlums put a heroin filled doll in her apartment without her knowledge.
Using disguises and patience, the villains get closer to the doll-- but Susy gets closer to the truth, until the climatic ending. This was the great Audrey Hepburns last movie until 1979's forgettable "Robin and Marian".
Though I wish she would have made more after this, it somehow makes it more memorable, because most people think of this as her last movie. Unlike most of her movies, this has a very very dark plot, and it shows her chops definitely, because it was so rare to see her in such a tough role.
Luckily, she is really very flawless. This thriller is so great, it could still hold up today. As silly as the story might be, it's always interesting, the acting is believable, and the action surprisingly goes on a lot.
The brilliant cinematography will keep you at the edge of your seat, yet there's not a lot of music-- unless its Henry Mancini's haunting tune (which should have won him an Academy Award). "Wait Until Dark" is a terrifying experience to watch, and for any fans of Audrey like me will love it.
