Review of Waist Deep (2006) by Jeff G — 03 Oct 2008
A very entertaining film that is far fetched but grounds itself in a hyper-stylized reality. This film plays almost as a urban superhero tale. Tyrese Gibson admittedly not one of my favorite actors pulls off everything with easy, little or no resistance. He always looks damn near model perfect while doing it. But to be fair so do most of the main characters.
This film in a way also plays like a 1970â??s black exploitation film that has come along late. It has bits of comedy. A Foxy fine leading lady. No white villian but also little to no white characters either so all of the action and scenes are handled in the hood.
Itâ??s also a huge step up for actor turned director Vondie Curtis-Hall whose previous films were the good â??Gridlâ??kdâ?? and the abysmal â??Glitterâ??
Megan Goode is delicious in this film and pulls off her role as a con-woman who finds her heart melting in one day over this guy. Tyrese seems to actually try to pull this role instead of just posing through the film. Though it is hard to take his character seriously when he is named after a Science chemical.
Itâ??s the story of a Ex-Con father who is trying to go straight. Whose son is kidnapped by the neighborhood crime lord/Kingpin and is told to get his son back he has to come up with $250,000 a debt that the kingpin feels tyreseâ??s character owes him. The film follows Tyrese as he pulls off many crimes to get the money while ducking ops and criminals he ripped off.
