Review of Wah-Wah (2005) by Adam Z — 15 Sep 2007
Richard E Grant's directorial debut is a competently made auto-biographical piece that never fails to entertain, but stays too much within its own limits to offer any real originality. The performances are good from the ensemble cast, especially Gabriel Byrne as the young Grant's awkward drunken father, but despite this and some fantastic scenes, it never really takes off, and by the time the finale kicks in you feel that there is an emotional tone lacking.
The film also suffers often from not knowing whether it wants to be a biography of its director or an account of the Brits last days in Swaziland. Still, a promising start for this first time film-maker.
