Review of Wag the Dog (1997) by Maj G — 13 Dec 2009
If it weren't for the third act, this would rank with Strangelove for one of the best political satires ever made. Mamet's hand is evident in the testosterone-fueled dialogue (eg DeNiro's dressing-down of CIA suit Macy), Hoffman's unctuous & ego-addled Motss is an amazing creation, the set design places most of the action in claustrophobic windowless or light-diffuse interiors, behold the men & women behind the curtain to whom no attention is paid.
Knopfler's soundtrack doesn't work, and yes, the end is flaccid, but this prescient and profoundly inspired film tears Washington a massive one.
