Review of Wadjda (2012) by Steve W — 06 Nov 2013
This film manages to break the mold. A female director makes a film about Saudi Arabia, even though they have no movie theatres or film industry. Its the tale of ten year old Wadjda, who wants a bike so she can race her friend and neighbour.
While she is trying to fight the oppressive country's strict laws, her mother has to deal with her father trying to get a second wife, among other subplots. Its the quiet and reflective emotional moments that really stand out.
This glimpse of another culture may be shocking to some, but its a great coming of age film and societal critique.
