Review of W. (2008) by Joseph R — 27 Jun 2009
It's decent, but only just. W. is pretty much par for the course for Oliver Stone's presidential psuedo-biopics. There are a lot of really famous quotes crammed into unusual speeches and conversations.
There' a lot of liberty taken with private conversations between Bush and his cabinet, as one would expect. Overall the movie's goal seems to be to mitigate the ineptitude of Bush, which I'm just not buying.
Is the man irresponsible? Yes. Stupid? Check. Insane? Arguable, but I'm going to give that a hearty yes as well. It's interesting, but it smacks to much of that "based on a true story" vibe.
And honestly "based on a true story doesn't mean shit". Ghostbusters was based on a true story. The story? There once was this guy ... the rest is ficiton, but there really was once a guy.
See what I mean? Who the fuck knows what really transpired between Bushie and his cronies? Not you, not I, and certainly not Oliver Stone. Meh, take it or leave it.
