Review of W. (2008) by Aaron C — 12 Nov 2009
I've said before I'm not the biggest Olly fan. He's managed to craft some half decent films over his 30 year career, some of which I'm just getting to. But he's not the focus here. No, in W.
it's all about Josh Brolin as Dubya, of which he does an amazing job. What makes this film so damned interesting is the way the 43rd presiden'ts image is handled. I think it's damn fair. Oliver Stone did not have an agenda in his depiction of Bush.
There are parts that bash his presidency and parts that viewers can sympathise with. The one major, unexcusable flaw is the lack of direction. Now, biopics are not lauded for their pinpoint accuracy, that's not the point.
Like I said, Stone didn't have an agenda with this one, as he usually does, and that may have translated into a less than concrete plot. Most of it is about Bush and his starting the war in Iraq, jumping into flashbacks here and there.
What one must remember, ultimately, is that in order to gain any sort of enlightenment or enjoyment from W. one must set aside any and all baised opinions of his character. It's worth it.
