Review of W. (2008) by Keven S — 20 Nov 2009
Oliver Stone has this new thing where he's making movies that look like they're going to be controversial to the max - and then when we watch them, we end up with some cookie cutter stuff. W. isn't much different than Stone's last film - World Trade Center.
Much of it looks like it was made for TV. It isn't a hatchet job on the most hated president of all time, it's more of a sad display of a man who took on a job and simply just wasn't qualified.
Sure, Bush comes across as stupid when he says some absolutely ridiculous things that question his mentality - sure his decisions are all based on Cheney's ideas - but aren't these things we already know from the news? What I really loved about this movie was young George Junior.
There should have been more of that past autobiograpical stuff - more binge drinking and Bush crashing his car in a drunken stupor. I couldn't get enough of Josh Brolin's performance and even though the cast around him was amazing, nobody else truly shined other than Brolin.
And I think that's true to the real life man - even though everybody else was putting in so much work, W always took the spotlight. This is a film you should see - just don't expect to learn anything new, you'll only come out of this feeling sorry for the douche.
