Review of W. (2008) by Marie K — 11 Dec 2009
Oliver Stone's biopic of the most notorious US president in recent memory makes for some interesting viewing. For a man who was os often represented as an imbecilic moron by the media, this film is a refreshingly unbiased look at his formative years.
Most of it is good enough to hold the attention of the casual viewer. Josh Brolin does a very good job as Bush, both old and young, and his chemistry in his scenes with James Cromwell's George Bush Snr is very good. Elizabeth Banks also makes a good showing as W's wife while an assortment of decent supporting actors make up the US administration.
Although W. feels like a very informative movie, it's difficult to pin anything really special on it. It is very well done and extremely watchable but there's nothing that much really going on here. Although we have some good performances and Stone's direction is accomplished, you can't help but feel that the film feels a little empty headed.
W. is a good movie but it will probably not be the definitive movie version of this particular gentleman's life in the long run.
