Review of W. (2008) by Brad S — 06 Mar 2011
W. is interesting but I'm not sure it captured everything about George W. Something seems to be missing. The movie certainly captures some of the 'highlights' of Bush's terms in office.
Politically the movie focuses on Iraq and his relationships with Powell, Cheney, and Tony Blair. Very little time is devoted to Rumsfeld - which seems strange. Privately the movie focuses on Bush's religious conversion, his relationship with his wife, his relationship with his father, and his partying in college.
Essentially Stone paints Bush as a slightly dimwitted, stubborn, religious man who has father issues, and is ultimatley driven to succeed to set aside his own self doubt. Interestingly little time is devoted 9/11.
Ultimately I'm not certain of the movies accuracy - something seems to be left undone - perhaps like George W. himeself.
