Review of Volver (2009) by Arianeta L — 04 Aug 2011
A beautiful and profound meditation upon death and trauma, Pedro Almodovar's Volver mixes comedy, tragedy, and drama together into a thoroughly entertaining and original piece of magical realism that explores the struggles of three generations of women as they grapple with death, abuse, and disease.
But Volver is ultimately not a downer--it is a film about about returning (Volver means "to return") to the past both to connect with the good times and to deal with the bad ones. It is a film about returning to our homes, families, and finally to your selves and recognizing the happiness, solace, and beauty that already exist all around us.
In other words, it is a film about returning to the past in order to move into the future. Brilliant performances, breathtaking cinematography, stylish direction, and an almost flawless script coalesce to render Volver a hilarious, heartbreaking, and unforgettable film.
