Review of Volver (2006) by Todd E — 29 Jan 2009
A pleasant surprise; not what I was expecting at all. That doesn't happen very often. I reluctantly watched this film at the urging of a friend, having previously avoided it due to a particularly uninteresting trailer I caught somewhere.
Having seen the film, I imagine it was QUITE a difficult job making an "uninteresting" trailer from this movie. The story is... "different". I don't know how to describe it without giving things away.
There are twists, turns, a little murder, a little mystery, and it's actually quite shocking in some places; a couple of heavy dramatic moments that I did NOT see coming at all. I saw the phrase "soap opera drama" in another review, and that pretty much sums it up.
The important difference here between Volver and "Days Of Our Lives" is that in this film, the "omg wtf" moments are executed well and in a dignified and very "human" manner; enough so that it feels entirely plausible and realistic.
Great acting all around, and of course, what can you say about Pedro Almodovar and films about women? The guy just plain knows what he's doing.
