Review of Voices of a Distant Star (2002) by Alvi M — 10 Oct 2008
This man is unbelievable. Like the later and more developed The Place Promised in Our Early Days, this is a sci-fi adventure with the added quality of guaranteed tears, at least for a sap like me. But the sheer economy of storytelling here is astonishing; in less than a half hour he sets up a totally convincing and unique universe and a compelling relationship between two characters who share like 3 minutes of screen time.
The only complaint one might have is that, like The Place Promised in Our Early Days, Shinkai sets up this awesome world and then tells you nothing about it. The mythology I can imagine behind the scenes here could easily fill a 2 hour epic. But that doesn't really matter to me...this setting just exists to make the heart of the story all the more poignant. Just brilliant...
