Review of Visioneers (2008) by Dave S — 21 Jun 2009
The positive things first: this is pretty funny at points, good at deadpan absurdity, and Galifianakis gives an eerily intense performance. But the heavyhanded social commentary here is really uninspiring, and never overcame my initial concern that Orwellian satires of corporate office jobs are really played out.
I mean, is it supposed to be mind-blowing or even insightful at this point to suggest that television can be vapid, big businesses can be impersonal, and lattes won't make you happy, but the free-spirit who lives in a small town and works at an independent bookstore might be what you really want?
