Review of Visioneers (2008) by Larissa A — 22 Jul 2012
This movie is like the offspring of Idiocracy, Surrogates, and Napolean Dynamite. I still can't decide if I hated it or loved it. It was incredibly boring; I could barely even stay awake for the entire 90 minutes. There was nothing in particular throughout the movie that caught my attention, made me laugh, or pushed me to think in any depth.
Yet, when it was finished, I found myself deeply contemplating our society and its parallels with the culture created in this film. I thought a few parts of the movie and even the overall concept could almost certainly be a veiled reference to the Bush administration and the obsessive fear Americans had towards exploding (due to terrorism rather than stress) following 9/11. At one point in the movie, George is listening to the news on the radio and it is announced that the president raised the alert level from brown to magenta (a clear poke at Bush's ridiculous terror threat alert system).
Overall, though the movie itself was somewhat disappointing, the feelings and thoughts it created were worth the watch.
