Review of Virunga (2014) by Phillip S — 16 Nov 2014
An absolutely gripping examination of the harsh and unstable contexts challenging the conservation of DRC's last wilderness areas for the Congolese people. Wildlife conservation is a humanitarian issue.
To not protect our legacy and where we come from only reflects a betrayal of our own selves. When life is under the constant threat of violence and death, it truly is a test of individual resilience to rise above the circumstances of today and still have hope for a better tomorrow.
If you ever want to witness the capacity of the human spirit to stand for something much larger than the self, look to Emmanuel De Merode, and if you ever want to witness the power it takes to hold ground against myopic capitalistic interests look to this movie.
This film equips the viewer with all the information and truth that we need to be aware of in this day and age, to change our attitude, expectations, agendas, and behaviors around, and do right by the wild and our selves.
We need to make that shift now, to ensure a future for us all. I think everyone, and I mean every single individual on this planet, needs to watch this compelling film, for the narratives unfolding in the Virunga microcosm exemplify the kind of problems we are facing on a global scale during the Anthropocene (the age of man.
