Review of Viridiana (1962) by Ben W — 01 Mar 2010
It's magnificently shot and thematically interesting, but has a misogynist vibe running through it that ruins its fine aspects. The cinematography, characters, and narrative are obsessed with raping and bringing the pious title character down.
It's hard to like a film with a hard-on to rape a would-be nun, even though I can appreciate Buñuel's assault on the Church, class and charity.
