Review of Village of the Damned (1995) by Bob L — 08 May 2010
Midwich Cuckoos get another bash at the big screen. John Carpenter gives this a modern makeover, but really shouldn't have. The original was spooky and intense, but in an effort to move more story along faster and more effects based, looses some of the tension from the village slowly being dominated as the children grow older.
A great cast turn in a fine performance (except Kirstie Alley who bubbles around mediocre)- including Mark Hamill who shows he can act if he makes the effort- all over shadowed by the superb Christopher Reeve.
A very effective soundtrack works too (with nods and winks to Rosemarys Baby) but a lack lustre script kills what could have been a fine remake by trying to be too modern and squeezing in too much 'conspiracy' back story.
Competent, but still give the original the edge for chills.
