Review of Videodrome (1983) by Tristan G — 10 Jul 2009
A surreal, disturbing and pretty riveting film from one of the masters of weird, David Cronenberg. James Woods plays a slick TV producer who finds the pirated broadcast of a frightening show called Videodrome, on which people appear to be tortured and murdered.
In his search to find the origins of the broadcast, he discovers the truth behind its existence, in a tangled web of conspiracy and violence. Woods does a good job as the hero, and his descent into madness is frightening.
The movie also features some brilliantly weird makeup and effects work from the late master, Rick Baker. Cronenberg's strange commentary on the media's role in our lives is as disturbing as it is poignant, even 25 years later.
