Review of Victoria (2015) by Tim M — 22 Feb 2018
Conceptually, 'Victoria' is a really interesting idea, however one take and one camera turns into a gimmick that long overstays its welcome. It's of no fault to the actors who try to make things work by improvising dialogue on what was a 12 page script.
A script that brief is unheard of for a movie well over two hours. The problem here is that the movie just isn't plausible. The filmmaker attempts to draw you in by making the first act realistic.
A girl takes an interest to a man; they grab a drink; they hang out. That would be somewhat normal, but she goes along on the adventure with three other guys as well. Ok, so maybe i'm thinking in too much like an American who doesn't trust shady men.
Then she leaves her job where she is about to open a cafe for the morning rush and goes along with the group for an unknown ride to "do something". The person they are doing the favor for in in a complete panic.
There's just no way she accompanies them in any world. Furthering the lunacy of the premise, even when she knows they are robbing a bank (it's not a spoiler because it's in the second line of the synopsis of the movie) she decides to stay with them.
This is why you don't read anything about a movie. The people who did the movie say it's about a bank robbery which doesn't happen until the transition between act two and three. That's a long time to wait with one shaky camera for a payoff.
Technically it's nice and this would have made one hell of a short film, but at the running time it's really just a one-trick pony. Final Score: 4.5/10.
