Review of Victor Frankenstein (2015) by Ethan P — 23 Feb 2016
The first hour of the film I found to be pretty fun, strong, and it moved at a good clip. Unfortunately, the 2nd act trips and never quite regains its footing. Max Landis also puts too much of himself in the script at times (sometimes it sounds like Max Landis is talking instead of our characters).
The film is well cast. Both leads are great, but I'd say it's Radcliffe as Igor that impresses most. This is easily his best role after Harry Potter. The main story is pretty cool, and I like that they decide to tell it from Igor's side this time around.
That said, there is a grating subplot that pops up far too often, involving an overly religious detective who makes it his mission to put an end to Frankenstein's madness. This wouldn't bother me so much, except the detective is in the film more than he needs to be, and in fact becomes the main force our heroes have to contend with.
Victor Frankenstein is built around an interesting idea, but the film just can't keep up with the momentum it had built in it's first act. While I can't say this was a great film (It's really not), I will say that it more than succeeds as a fun, entertaining watch.
