Review of Victim (1961) by Sean O — 16 Nov 2010
A must-see for any person interested in the history of gay rights. here is the first english language film to utter the word 'homosexual.' but beyond the noteriety, it is a well-constructed suspense drama about blackmail in a time of absurd anti-sodomy laws.
the film takes some criticism for dealing with its subjects as 'victims' (see the title) yet is nowhere near as cloying as 'gentleman's agreement's' forced attempt to make a social statement.
'victim' does a great job of humanizing the variety of gay characters, and no doubt opened a lot of minds to the reality that we are, in fact, everywhere.
