Review of Vicky Donor (2012) by Jennifer D — 23 Apr 2012
Vicky Donor â?? Rating: 8 /10.
A good movie needs no stars, and Vicky Donor smashingly proves this right.
Produced by John Abraham and directed by Shoojit Sircar, who also directed the sublime & haunting â??Yahaanâ??, Vicky Donor is a faultless script by Juhi Chaturvedi and effortlessly sets the screen on fire with a simple story and lovable characters with the right number of snips & cuts by Shekhar Prajapati. Shoojit adds a light hearted touch and brings the taboo topic of Sperm Donation to Indian cinema against backdrop of a love story. Finally the sheer joy of a comedy without the bawdy toilet humour, in spite of its main theme!
Ayushmann Khurana is Vicky Arora, a â??welaâ?? fun-loving boy from Delhiâ??s Lajpat Nagar living with â??Dollyâ?? his mum who runs a ladies only parlor and worldly wise Biji (grandmother), played superbly by Dolly Ahluwalia and Kamlesh Gill. The old ladies constant bickering and heartwarming banter while they swig some whiskey will have you in splits. Constant nagging by his Mum to join uncleâ??s clothing business finds Vicky cross path with Dr. Chaddha (Anu Kapoor) the owner of a fertility clinic that desperately needs a fertile sperm donor. Dr Chaddha views the world as a congregation of sperms and his attempts to convince Vicky is hilarious. Vicky succumbs and is immediately discovered as a high quality model donor with guaranteed results for infertile couples. The trouble starts when Vicky falls in love with beautiful Bengali Banker Ashumi Roy, played by new comer Yami Gautam. They get married, much to the horror of the culture obsessed Bengali father and fun loving Punjabi mummies. Vickyâ??s past catches up with the young couple and after a few emotional hiccups the story is back on track with a heartwarming ending.
The movie tackles infertility, re-marriage of a divorcee, spinster aunty and life of strong single mothers/grandmothers (in real terms) without unnecessary histrionics and a healthy dose of humour. Each and every character in the film brings a breath of fresh air to the big screen. Go watch this film and swing your arms to the â??light-bulb changing â??dance moves and groove to â??Rum & Whiskeyâ??.
For me the only grouse was the full on Punjabi, thank God for the sub titles, but again some words are best expressed in true North Indian shtyle.
Go and have fun at the cinema with Vicky Donor. Do not miss this Gem!
