Review of Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) by Hans J. E — 29 Nov 2010
Avoided this for a long time because I thought it would be cliche Spanish crap. And totally unbelievable that a ScarJo would ever fall for a Javier Bardem. Then I got to thinking since it featured ScarJo, it must be directed by Woody Allen. I tuned in late so didn't see his name and liked it enough to decide it must not be Allen directed, so suprised to see that now.
Actually not the worst story and well-enough done. Bardem turns out to be a pretty attractive guy, and that opens the door for the believable romance stuff. Beyond that, nothing is so far done as to be ridiculous.
What is ridiculous is Scarlett and Penelope Cruz making out in a dark room. Not sure about ScarJo's acting ability but she is always fun to look at. Cruz is just all-in-all impressive. One of the most beautiful women on the planet, she can act, and she speaks Spanish, which she gets to use a fair bit given the setting in Spain.
Given my contempt for most Allen pictures, I must say this one is pretty decent but not great.
