Review of Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) by Christopher S — 17 Feb 2011
One of the more underrated Woody Allen films. Allen hit a rough stretch in the late 1990s into the early 2000s and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, along with Match Point, proved Allen still had it as a director and a writer.
While I absolutely love Scarlett Johansson, it was Penelope Cruz, Rebecca Hall, and Patricia Clarkson who deserve most of the acclaim. Cruz did win Best Supporting Actress as the emotionally unstable but passionate Maria Elena but Hall deserves some credit as the straight laced but having doubts Vicky, a role which I found more challenging than Johansson's carefree Cristina.
The writing was excellent and the plot twists, especially at the end, were great.
