Review of Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) by Aidan H — 24 Jul 2010
Allen's recent movies haven't done much for me and VCB is no exception. He seems to be re-booting many of his themes from yesteryear and here, especially, Rebecca Hall seems to be channeling Diane Keaton as the neurotic square with holiday hots for stereotypically sexy Spaniard Bardem.
Templates for Cruz and Johansson (as the ditzy blonde and fiery mad bitch respectively) are also cut-out-and-keep mannequins for Woody's cinematic sex games. It's supposed to be about love but, as that subject hardly seems to be addressed in any depth, it instead mildly satirizes modern women, art and pretension in its touristy take on Mediterranean romance.
There are some chuckles at the expense of its dotty and indecisive characters but nothing captivates or entertains and it ends without a proper conclusion. No bangs, plenty of whimpering and lacking in any kind of steam, VCB is misanthropic and cantankerous, despite the gorgeous girlies and locations.
Star for the latter.
