Woody Allen writes, probably, the most direct and intriguing dialogue since Billy Wilder or, well, Woody Allen. To be frank, this movie isn't nearly the film that 'Annie Hall' or 'Hannah and her Sisters' are. But, it's one of the best films I've seen this year, and it's warranted a five star rating.

The story is of Vicky(Rebecca Hall), a brunette. Logical, left brained, stern. And Cristina(Scarlett Johansson), a blonde. Impulsive, right brained, care free. And, of course, Barcelona; their summer getaway. One night, Cristina notices a sexy man in a red button up shirt looking at her from across the way. It doesn't take him long. His name is Jaun Antonio(Javier Bardem), and he basically asks the girls if they'd like to fly with him to a distant city in Spain, and sleep with him. Both of them. Vicky is hostile and refuses. Cristina gladly accepts. The movie from that point seems to be predictable, yet the complications grow, and unexpected things happen left and right.

The thing I probably enjoyed most about the film is it's classic style. Every shot is simple, no big special effects, no foul language, and there's an intriguing narration that makes the film feel nostalgic, like a storybook almost. The beautiful city of Barcelona is excellently photographed and the costumes are gorgeous.

An interesting plot development emerges with the introduction of Juan Antonio's wife, played magnificently by Penelope Cruz. She's a little on the crazy side, and you never know what she's going to do next. She also provides most the jokes for the film, and they are certainly funny. As is the film itself. The characters have dialogue that both pops out at the audience and also feels natural.

It's difficult for me to say much about the film. It's a movie you've got to see, there's no way to describe it. I can say that if you liked Woody Allen's other films, you will like this one. If you didn't like Woody Allen's other films, get back on your space ship and back where you came from. Vicky Cristina Barcelona is always intriguing, always unpredictable, always romantic, and constantly funny. I recommend it to anyone.
