Review of Vexille (2007) by Daniel K — 18 Nov 2008
This is a very lackluster picture on almost every level. I found it almost impossible to get invested in the characters at all and the story wasn't much better. The script and casting/acting definitely need a good deal of work.
The animation left much to be desired compared to numerous vastly superior pictures. This picture/story was not ready for the big screen. The elements of the film I found interesting were the incredible lengths to which the corporation went to counter the intelligence gathering methods of their adversaries.
The complete shielding of all electromagnetic signals from an entire country is a very interesting, if currently quite impractical, concept. I will grant that the chase sequence through the tunnel near the end is very well executed.
The score is another interesting element, but it couldn't negate the other issues as it was often lacking itself. The story elements in a good video game are more nuanced and sophisticated than this film is.
The ending is ridiculously corny and ill conceived.
