Review of Vesper (2022) by Masterlu — 01 Jan 2023
Vesper is a tortuously slow paced dystopian future science fiction story (teen girl tries to save the world) that is generally liked by movie critics but will be hated by the general movie audiences. There are tense moments sprinkled throughout the story but not enough to raise it to the level of good adventure.
The main villain is a very cruel but small old man that uses CHILDREN as enforcers so lacked credibility with me (why doesn't someone simply kill him?). Apparently, to qualify as high art, a lot of stuff have to go unexplained so that the general audiences will be scratching their heads until they are bald.
Spoiler Alert: The ending is mysterious and beautifully symbolic I suppose, but logically questionable (stupid?). The heroine climbs a mysterious tower and releases her last FEW "super" seeds to the winds, which will spread and rejuvenate the world, I suppose.
BUT, I'm thinking, what if those few seeds DO NOT survive in the wild? Granted, some seeds do spread by wind and birds, etc. It would have been smarter to grow much more seeds deliberately by hand and then spread some by wind.
On the other hand, another interpretation could be that the heroine half gave up and simply left the fate of the world to nature/God on whether the seeds would save the world or not.
