Review of Vertigo (1958) by Stephen E — 07 Jul 2013
The themes of love, loss and obssession that echo throughout "Vertigo" and its shocking and abrupt ending make it perhaps the darkest film that Alfred Hitchcock ever made. There's a constant undertone of gloom and sadness that weighs heavily on the viewer, making watching it one profound experience.
James Stewart is woefully sympathetic and understated in his performance and Kim Novak is sensual and beautiful in hers. "Vertigo" may not be as masterful a film as critics ensure that it is, but it is mesmerizing and saddening, and also quite scary.
