Review of Vertigo (1958) by Rocknblues 8 — 11 Nov 2012
And outstanding film. It's a tale of lies, obsession and anxiety. Stewart gives a fine performance as the obsessed retired detective paid to keep track of a friend's unstable wife that he believe has been taken over by a dead ancestor. Kim Novak gives a complex, but subtle performance. The kind that you really don't find from actresses of today.
Some say this is not plausible, but I believe it to be one of the best written movies I've ever seen. Sadly, I've seen some of it's ripoffs first, and that took off a tad bit of punch as I sort of knew what to expect. However,it's the kind of film that mostly sums up Hitchcock. That is from the films of his that I've seen. And while I prefer the more simple Psycho, this might be his best movie. I'm not sure the re-watch value is high, but that doesn't take away from how well written the movie is. Everybody should check this one out.
PS:I need to give a shout out Bernard Herrmann. What a fantastic composer. This film wouldn't have the same eerie feeling if not for his score. His work on Psycho, Cape Fear and Taxi Driver is also outstanding and unforgettable.
