Review of Vertical Limit (2000) by Deb S — 22 Nov 2009
Mountaineering is an inherently dangerous and risky sport. I'm no professional but these characters are supposed to be the best climbers in the world, yet most of them end up dead because of mistakes that not even an amateur would make. Vertical Limit is filled with the usual clichés of a veteran climber who has a spiritual connection with the mountain; the surfer dudes who spend their time in the camp getting stoned; the beautiful girl with the perfect make-up and the hero who used to be the best but hasn't climbed since he lost his father in an accident.
This film has a mish mash of everything; namely the rescue plot, the revenge plot, the backpack-full-of-nitroglycerine plot. Lots of nice cliff-hanging moments, spiced up with some added nitroglycerine to keep the explosions coming!
The special effects were well done and breathtaking. I though the first scene was definitely the best, filled with suspense, looked realistic and had my heart racing.
