Review of Versus (2000) by Graham A — 19 Apr 2008
A film that defined odds (lack of funding, filming location etc.) to bring about a cult hit, Versus is one of the most exciting films I've ever seen.
It reminds me of those cheesy gun fights kids make on youtube, only this one appears to have proffessionals actors and choreographers. And it pays off.
It's not without faults. The plot feels a little thin and full of holes, the set (a forest) is too samey and when you start to develop a liking to the characters they die and get reincarnated into less likeable forms.
Still, the characters are quirky and memorable despite their lack of names, the fights are stunning (notably the final sword bout) and the violence is mostly realistic and chillingly gruesome. A must for the Matrix worshippers.
